Matt Sankey is an upland farmer based at 1,300 feet above sea level in the upper reaches of the Onny Valley, near Ratlinghope. He runs Angus–Hereford cross beef cattle alongside a flock of Welsh ewes, managing livestock in the challenging hill farming environment of south Shropshire. While maintaining a thriving farm business remains his main priority, Matt is equally committed to caring for the landscape in which he lives and works. He has undertaken numerous environmental initiatives on the farm, including hedge planting and the creation of wildlife corridors to support biodiversity. He has been a committed member of Upper Onny Farmers since its formation in 2018 and now serves as Chairman of the Community Interest Company (CIC), helping to guide the group’s work in supporting sustainable farming and collaboration within the local farming community. He believes we are only custodians of the land for the time we are here, and that it is our responsibility to work with it carefully and make the most of the opportunities we are given, ensuring it is protected and sustained for the future.
